Fragile Nails – What Causes Them?

Stress and poor nutrition are two leading causes of fragile nails, but there are many factors that could be responsible, including these:

  • Diseases ( eczema, psoriasis, fungal)

  • Contact with detergents, solvents or chemicals.

Many people complain about fragile nails. The nail plate is brittle and vulnerable. Even with low- impact situations, the nail can split, peal or tear. Vitamins, calcium and minerals are important for healthy growth and maintenance of strong, healthy nails.

Keeping your fingernails trimmed and even makes it less likely that they will become fragile, split, crack, tear, or become brittle. It’s easier to trim soft nails, so, do it after a bath and you’ll end up with nice even cuts. When you’re done clipping, apply skin softening cream to your hands and nails.

If your nails are in contact with water often, the solution is to cover them with rubber gloves. Did you know that nails can absorb up to 25 percent of their weight in water?  Nails expand as they absorb water, then contract when dry. Poor nutrition can also cause brittle nails. The solution is to include foods in the daily diet that will promote healthy nails. Especially foods with biotin such as: peanuts, almonds, Swiss chard, goat’s milk, yogurt, tomatoes, and eggs.

Soaking fragile nails in vegetable oil can also be very effective. It replenishes the moisture lost from allowing nails to get wet too often.
